UK online slot speed and autoplay rules: what licensed games must do
Online slots offered by a Gambling Commission licensee to people in Great Britain must follow design rules intended to reduce play intensity. The current remote technical standards require a minimum game-cycle time, individual action for each cycle and restrictions on features that accelerate the result. These rules describe licensed product design; they do not make gambling safe or profitable.
The 2.5-second slot cycle
The Commission’s RTS 14D says at least 2.5 seconds must pass from the start of a slot game until the next cycle can begin. The player must release and press the start control again, or take an equivalent fresh action. Continued contact with a button, key or screen cannot start another cycle.
Autoplay is not allowed
RTS 8 requires a customer to commit to each game cycle individually. For online gaming, the system cannot offer autoplay that starts repeated cycles without a separate player decision. The poker exception for automatically posting blinds does not turn casino autoplay back on.
Turbo and quick-spin features
RTS 14E prohibits functionality that lets a customer reduce the time until the result is presented. The Commission names turbo, quick spin and slam stop as examples. The rule applies to remote casino games regardless of overall cycle speed, with limited guidance for bonus features where no additional stake is wagered.
Other visible design protections
- The product must not facilitate playing multiple casino games simultaneously.
- A customer cannot be offered the option to cancel a withdrawal request.
- A return equal to or below the total stake cannot be celebrated as a win.
- Games must not actively encourage chasing losses or increasing a chosen spend.
How a player can use the rules
A suspiciously fast repeat cycle, an autoplay control or a turbo feature on a site claiming to serve Great Britain is a reason to verify the operator and domain in the Commission’s public register. A game hosted outside the licensed British market may follow different rules.
